Health Careers students, former instructor/current HOSA advisor Jona Cartwright, BSN, RN and current instructor Tyler Scutchfield, BSN, RN competed in Indianapolis at Indiana HOSA-Future Health Professionals conference April 16-18.
HOSA, a student lead organization allows middle, high school, and college students the opportunity to compete in health-related events, for the opportunity to earn scholarships at state and international levels.
This year the seven following students from North Central Area Vocational Cooperative (NCAVC) competed.
Catherine Neese, LaVille High School senior, competed in Medical Terminology, Health Career Display, and Home Health Aide. She qualified for round two in Home Health Aide and placed in the top 10. From there Catherine placed second in the state of Indiana and has qualified to compete at the 2019 International HOSA conference in June, where she will have the opportunity to compete for a scholarship!
Julianna Noble, Oregon Davis High School junior, and Aaliyah Shafer, Argos High School senior, competed in Medical Terminology, Health Careers Display, and CERT SKILLS. They advanced, as a team, to round two in CERT SKILLS and placed in the top 10.
Jolie Koontz, Plymouth High School junior, competed in Medical Terminology, Health Career Display, and Home Health Aide. She qualified for round two in Home Health Aide.
Erin Renneker, Plymouth High School junior, competed in Medical Terminology, Health Career Display, and Physical Therapy. She qualified for round two in Physical Therapy.
Gabby Ruiz, Plymouth High School senior, competed in Medical Terminology, Epidemiology, and Extemporaneous Health Display.
Sydni Weir, Plymouth High School junior, competed in Medical Terminology, Sports Medicine, and Health Career Display.
Mrs. Cartwright taught Health Careers for NCAVC from 2008 to January 2019. Cartwright accepted the St. Joseph Health System Community Outreach Coordinator position for Marshall County in January. Her love for teaching remains as she continued to be the HOSA advisor this year. She plans to continue to be a co-advisor for HOSA.
Mrs. Scutchfield accepted the Health Careers Instructor position in January, and is excited to keep growing the program for NCAVC and expanding involvement in HOSA. The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science technology education students, therefore, helping students to meet the needs of the health care community.
Through the HOSA Competitive Events Program, members can compete in teams or as individuals in over 55 different events related to all aspects of the healthcare industry. HOSA integrates into the Health Science Technology Education curriculum to develop and recognize smart, dedicated, and passionate future health professionals.
