Jack Jordan_St. Rep.2017As Hoosier students prepare to return to the classroom in the coming weeks, local schools can make safety improvements at no cost thanks to a new state program.

Indiana State Representative Jack Jordan said the Indiana Department of Administration will provide free handheld metal detectors to schools that want them. This program will make one device available for every 250 students in traditional public, charter and accredited non-public schools. Interested schools can submit a request by July 19 to receive detectors by mid-August. Requests made after this date will be fulfilled later in the fall.

Jordan said, “To build on the state’s school safety policies, I recently supported a new law appropriating an additional $5 million to the Indiana Secured School Safety Grant Fund used to train safety specialists, hire school resource officers and improve building security. This funding is in addition to the nearly $45 million in state grants awarded to local districts for safety upgrades.”
