05/13/11  On Friday, May 6th at 10:42 AM Patrolman Nicholas Laffoon with the Marshall County Police Department responded to Michigan Road north of 4th Road for a two vehicle accident.  Upon arriving, the driver of 2007 Pontiac SUV, 57 year old Mary A KleinFehn of Knox said she diverted her attention from the roadway as she reached down to answer a call on her cell phone, That’s when she observed the second vehicle, just before the collision.  The driver of the second vehicle, a 2005 International Semi Truck was 55 year old Joe Gurner Jr. of Romulus, Michigan. He told officers he was southbound on Michigan Road north of 4th Road pulling a trailer when he observed KleinFehns vehicle drift left of center into his lane.  He swerved to the right shoulder trying avoid impact but the SUV struck the rear tires of the trailer and came to rest on the roadway.

Later Friday afternoon at 2:52 PM Patrolman Jonathan Bryant responded to 2775 Plymouth/LaPorte Trail after receiving a theft complaint. Upon arriving the victim reported a green, older model, Craftsman riding lawn mower with a 42 inch deck along with a tool box containing sockets and miscellaneous tools were taken from inside the unlocked garage. 

On Saturday, May 7th at 12:00 AM Patrolman Travis O’Neal working along with the government funded DUI Task Force Project.  He initiated a traffic stop on US 31 north of 13th Road on a maroon Buick driven by 20 year old Ladarren Roberts of South Bend.  After an investigation Ladarren was arrested for possession of marijuana. The passenger in the vehicle, 20 year old Stephen Kirkendoll of South Bend was found to have and active felony warrant out of St. Joseph County.  He was also charged with possession of marijuana.  Both subjects were transported to the Marshall County Jail where they were booked on $500 bonds and a hold was placed on Kirkendoll for St. Joseph County.

Later that day at 2:58 PM Patrolman Brandon Cooper responded to the residence at 3486 Lilac Road in reference to a burglary complaint.  The home owner advised that sometime between the hours of 12:30 and 3:00 PM two unknown male subjects kicked in the door of the home and gained entry and removed an Emerson LCD flat screen television. The home owner advised that subjects may have possibly been driving an older model blue car.

Then at 10:21 Saturday night Patrolman Cooper responded to 15999 US 6 and Quince Road after receiving a 9-1-1 call for a single vehicle accident with entrapment.  Arriving on the scene it was discovered that 40 year old Dewey Smith of Walkerton had gone off the roadway and rolled his 1994 Pontiac van into a row of pine trees.  Mr. Smith was out of the vehicle when officers arrived. During the investigation it was determined that Mr. Smith was believed to be intoxicated. He was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.  When Smith was released from the hospital he was taken into custody by Officers of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and booked into the County Jail for operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .15% or greater and his bond was set at $1,000.
