04/12/11 The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a Major Moves contract to construct four bridges and new road alignment between U.S. 6 and State Road 4 as part of the new U.S. 31 project between South Bend and Plymouth. Walsh & Kelly, Inc. of Griffith was awarded the $24,172,168 contract.

This latest contract is one of six active projects along the new U.S. 31 corridor. In all, there are 19 projects planned as part of the $418.4 million project in Marshall and St. Joseph counties.

Approximately 15 miles of the 20-mile corridor will be constructed on new terrain. Once complete, U.S. 31 will be a freeway between Plymouth and South Bend, with access only at interchanges. The entire corridor is expected to be opened to traffic by the end of 2014.

The goal of the project is to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along the route. This project is part of the larger Major Moves initiative to upgrade the route to freeway standards and cut a half hour off travel time between Indianapolis and South Bend.

Governor Mitch Daniels’ Major Moves transportation plan capitalizes on Indiana’s strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. The innovative plan creates jobs and will leave a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.
