Fireworks_SafetyThe Fourth of July is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate our nation’s independence than to set off some patriotic fireworks. The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency, among others wants to spread awareness to the dangers and laws surrounding fireworks.

The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency would like to offer these important safety tips this Fourth of July to keep our community safe.

  1. Always purchase fireworks from licensed fireworks dealers. Check packages and labels to make sure only 1.4G consumer fireworks are purchased; all other types of fireworks are illegal in Indiana.
  2. Use a clear, open area.  Keep audience a safe distance away from shooting sight.
  3. Never throw or point fireworks at people or pets.
  4. Have a fire extinguisher, hose or bucket of water nearby.
  5. Never alter any fireworks device or attempt to make your own.
  6. Never lean over fireworks when lighting.
  7. Only light one firework item at a time and never attempt to re-light or fix a “dud” firework.
  8. Never let children handle, play with, or light any firework.
  9. Consider buying glow sticks instead of sparklers for children; sparklers can burn at temperatures high enough to melt glass.
  10. Never smoke or drink alcoholic beverages while handling fireworks.
  11. Fireworks may be discharged from 9 a.m. to midnight on July 4.
  12. Be sure to contact your local fire department or police department to obtain more information regarding fireworks laws and regulations.
  13. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
  14. Remember: Loud noises can cause pets to become stressed. It always a good idea to keep pets on a leash or indoors for their safety.  If your pet has noise phobias from fireworks, talk to your veterinarian about appropriate anti-anxiety drugs or sedatives to help ease their stress.
  15. Along with fireworks safety, Indiana enforces laws that set restrictions for fireworks users that include possible penalties. For instance, fireworks may be used only on the user’s property; or on the property of someone who has consented to the use of fireworks; or at a special discharge location. Fireworks can only be purchased by persons 18 years of age or older and children may never use any kind of firework without adult supervision. Penalties for violations can range from misdemeanors to felonies.

We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July.
