INDOTlogoThe Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is warning drivers that several roads across Northwest Indiana are closed because of severe flooding. High waters have made some roads impassable and dangerous.

The following roads are closed because of flooding in Starke County:

State Road 23 – between State Road 10 and U.S. 30

State Road 218 – between State Road 29 and U.S. 35
State Road 17 – between State Road 14 and State Road 16

State Road 23 – between U.S. 30 and State Road 10

INDOT crews are patrolling state roads, posting high water signs or closing roads as needed. At this time high water closures on state roadways across the Northwest Indiana district are not widespread, but motorists need to practice extreme caution due to the potential for flooding.

INDOT would like to remind you of these safety tips if you encounter flooded roads.

  • Be alert for barricades and high water signs
  • Never drive beyond a ‘Road Closed’ sign
  • Do not drive through standing water

The average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water, and roads covered by water are prone to collapse. Attempting to drive through water also may stall your engine, with the potential to cause irreparable damage if you try to restart the engine. If you come upon a flooded street, take an alternate route.

Drivers in Northwest Indiana can monitor road closures, road conditions, and traffic alerts at any time via the District’s social media channels:www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
