INDOT_US31_BridgeSOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the end of U.S. 31 Northbound closures, between Kern Road and the U.S. 20 Bypass.

Around 9:30 a.m. today crews began setting 100,000 pound bridge beams over U.S. 31 for the new Johnson Road bridge. A total of four bridge beams were set, each requiring a 20 minute complete closure of the northbound lanes of U.S. 31.

Closures Tomorrow, June 2 – U.S. 31 Southbound: U.S. 31 southbound will be down to one lane all day between Kern Road and the U.S. 20 Bypass, and the ramp from eastbound U.S. 20 Bypass to southbound U.S. 31 will be closed all day. In addition, periodic 20 minute closures for all traffic on U.S. 31 southbound will occur as many as 10 times throughout the day between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. U.S. 31 northbound will be unaffected on Tuesday.

To avoid delays, drivers are encouraged to avoid U.S. 31 southbound entirely on Tuesday.

The bridge beam settings today and tomorrow are part of the new Johnson Road bridge, in conjunction with the new U.S. 31 project. The new Johnson Road bridge, like the Fellows Street bridge and the Jackson Road bridge which are already open to traffic, will allow easier access for emergency services and residents to neighborhoods around the new limited access U.S. 31.
