For many years, the Indiana State School Music Association has recognized outstanding and well-rounded high schools by awarding an “All-Music Award”.  This year ISSMA has extended this award to the middle, elementary, and junior high school levels.  Lincoln Junior High is one of only eighteen middle schools in the state to earn the “All-Music Award” for band.

In order to earn the All-Music Award, middle school programs must meet three criteria.  First, at least one solo performance and one small group performance must earn a gold rating in middle or higher difficulty levels at a Solo & Ensemble event.  Second, a gold rating must be earned in a jazz organization event.  Third, a concert band must also earn a gold rating in group three or higher.

Lincoln bands met the criteria and then some this year.  Annie Keller, Mickaela Bush, Leslie Dorantes, Amanda McFarland, Tess Petzke, Nick Spier, Jack Garner, Trent McKenzie, and Kaiyan Naylor performed events that earned gold ratings and helped Lincoln qualify for the Solo & Ensemble portion of the award.

With the creation of a jazz group that met during the school day, Lincoln was also able to produce an active and competitive jazz band.  The jazz band competed in LaPorte and earned a gold rating from all three judges.  Konnor Ray and Hugh Smith performed improvised solos at the event.  The jazz band has been very active in school and community events as well.

Finally, both the 7th and 8th grade concert bands earned gold ratings in ISSMA performances.  The 7th grade band performed in group three and earned a gold rating with distinction.  The 8th grade band performed in group one, the most difficult group level for junior high, and also earned gold ratings from all judges.

“Every student involved in band at Lincoln had a hand in helping earn this award,” stated band director, Lisa Wallyn.  “I am so proud of the growth these students have shown this year.  I am also very impressed at how many students pushed themselves to try new things.  Many students learned a new instrument or played a solo for the first time this year.  This attitude of striving for excellence will benefit them as they become adults.”

If you would like to hear these excellent groups, a free concert will be held at Lincoln Junior High on Wednesday, May 27th.  The concert starts at 6:30 PM in the red gym.  Celebrate the end of the school year with popular music from radio and movies!
