Sergeant Jordan Rans with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was contacted in July 2023 regarding a sex offender living in the Tyner area.  He was told Jacob Nemeth was living at 17774 Vine Street although he was a registered sex offender from St. Joseph County.

Sergeant Rans was able to find Nemeth’s information and determined that he was a registered sex offender through Starke County and weekly reports through St. Joseph County showed him as homeless.  In August Officer Rans and Patrolman Bragg made contact with Nemeth and he denied living at the Tomblin residence.  Neighbors told the sheriff’s officers he had been at the home for several months.

Indiana State Police Officer Jason Faulstich with Investigative Technologies confirmed that cell phone activity for Nemeth was coming from that location.

At that point, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department had probable cause for a warrant for Jacob Nemeth for the crime of failure to register as a sex offender with a prior conviction in Starke County.  On January 24, 2024, a warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, April 17th, and booked into the Marshall County Jail for a sex offender registration violation and held on a $5,000 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
