Mary Alyce Ruff Pentelow, 95, walked through Heaven’s gates on Monday, February 19, 2024 at Miller’s Merry Manor of Plymouth, IN.

Mary Alyce was born at home in North Liberty, IN on May 8, 1928. She was the second daughter of Ennis and Dorotha (Bare) Ruff. She graduated from West High School in May of 1946. She attended most class reunions over the years, however, only her best friend, Liz Brown survives. Mary Alyce, Liz, and Ruth Beatty were part of the 1939 softball team that won at the State level. She met Leon K. Pentelow right out of high school and they were married November 17, 1947. They resided in the Plymouth area for their entire 78 years of marriage.

Mary Alyce worked at home as a seamstress. She created prom and wedding dresses, baby layettes, and Halloween costumes, as well as doing alterations. A lady of many skills, she created hand crafts, such as quilts, cloth dolls, lace dollies, and knitted items. Before her stroke, she crafted cloth purses and sold many at local craft shows.

She attended the First United Church of Christ since her marriage in 1947. She was a very active member over the years, teaching Sunday School and as a council member. Mary Alyce raised two sons and cared for two grandchildren and several nieces. Her home was the daycare for her two grandchildren and three nieces. She loved her family and provided valuable lessons of love and care. She followed the Chicago Cubs and Bears all her life, Go Cubbies!

Mary Alyce is survived by her two sons: James L. (Mary L.) Pentelow of Argos, IN; Lynn A. Pentelow of Plymouth, IN; her grandchildren: Amy M. (Clint) Spriggs; David J. (Kristina) Pentelow; her great-grandchildren: (Amy) Baylee; Brett; Julia; Daria; (David) Kassidy; and Samantha; and her 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Alyce was preceded in death by her parents, Ennis and Dorotha Ruff; her siblings; and 1 nephew.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Deaton-Clemens Van Gilder Funeral Home (300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563).

A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Chuck Krieg officiating.

The burial will take place in New Oak Hill Cemetery (Plymouth, IN) on Monday, February 26, 2023.
