The Indiana Department of Health recently awarded more than $35 million in grants to help improve health outcomes for Hoosiers through the Health Issues and Challenges Grant, which was established in 2021 by the General Assembly.

Applicants were given priority based on the high need and high impact outlined in their grant proposals. Funding includes:

  • $850,000 to address asthma;
  • More than $980,000 to address cancer prevention;
  • Nearly $2.7 million for cardiovascular health and diabetes;
  • $5.6 million for community health workers;
  • More than $4 million for community paramedicine;
  • More than $6.5 million to address hepatitis C;
  • Nearly $790,000 for tobacco prevention;
  • More than $4.2 million for lead prevention; and
  • Nearly $9.4 million to address food insecurity and obesity issues.

Senator Stacey Donator said, β€œIn Senate District 18, the following organizations were recipients of the grant:

  • Health Community Coalition of Kosciusko County for its program for cancer;
  • Logansport Memorial Hospital in Cass County for its program for diabetes and community health workers;
  • Marshall County Health Department for its program for elevated blood lead levels;
  • Miami County Health Department for its program for elevated blood lead levels;
  • Cass County Health Department for its program for elevated blood lead levels;
  • Carroll County Health Department for its program for elevated blood lead levels;
  • Fulton County Health Department for its program for elevated blood lead levels;
  • Goshen Health in Kosciusko County for its program for food insecurity and obesity;
  • Highland Heights Foundation in Carroll County for its program for food insecurity and obesity; and
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana in Fulton, Marshall, and Kosciusko counties for its program for food insecurity and obesity.”

The senator said, β€œI am pleased to see so many local health care providers seeking ways to address some of the major health concerns we are facing in Indiana. I look forward to the improvements this funding will have on the lives of Hoosiers.”
