Jeff Houin and Rich Ziegler appeared before the Marshall County Park Board this month and discussed future plans for the mountain bike trails at the Trails at Mill Pond.

Created less than a year ago, the mountain bike trail opened Memorial Day weekend in 2021.

Greg Hildebrand, President of the County Park Board brought up the previous discussion on having directional signs installed.

Deb VanDeMark, Secretary of the Park Board said Jason Peters head of the County Highway Department said they will install the new signs.  He just needs a map showing where they want the signs located.

Jeff Houin who has been one of the volunteers leading the charge to create the mountain bike trail said they had a volunteer day last month and got a lot accomplished in laying out and doing the initial clearing of a new trail on the west side of the powerlines. While he is targeting Memorial Day this year to open the new trail, Houin said, “I think we will be ready well before that.”

To complement the trail, VanDeMark and Houin discussed clearing a section at the pond so people could fish there.  Houin said there have been discussions of creating a picnic area at the pond and a place where people could put in a canoe or kayak for additional recreational opportunities.

Houin said he’s heard a lot of feedback from people biking the trail but he’s hearing more and more from people who are just hiking the trails.
