On Thursday, November 4th, at approximately 1:30 in the morning an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department initiated a traffic stop on a green 2000 Saturn passenger vehicle in the area of US 31 and Michigan Road.

During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle, 50-year-old Robert L. Whitmer of LaPorte was found to be operating a vehicle with a lifetime suspension of his driving privileges. Whitmer also had an active warrant through Elkhart County.

He was transported to the Marshall County Jail and processed for operating a vehicle after being adjudged a Habitual Traffic Violator for Life and is being held on the Elkhart County warrant.  His cash bond was set at $1,500.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
