Thursday evening the Marshall County Park Board took the official action of determining the location where they want to move the historic trustee log cabin to.

After three executive sessions which included reviewing two appraisals, the County Park Board selected the piece of property at lies between the two lots that West Township has of Sycamore Road, immediately west of the old West School on State Road 17.

Marshall County Park and Recreation also motioned to offer to David and Beverly Jackson, the owners of the former school property.  They plan to make an offer contingent upon funding and a variance from the County BZA to allow the building to be moved to the small lot.

Members of the County Park Board also motioned to ask County Attorney Jim Clevenger to create a simple contract with Yoder’s Log & Timber Pros of Nappanee to deconstruct the historic log cabin, move it to the new location and rebuild the log cabin with a foundation and new roof. The quote approved in the August meeting was $68,000.

Park Board member Dick Markley who is heading up the log cabin project suggested creating a support committee for the project.  The County Park Board will be looking for volunteers with an interest in the project to step up and become committee members.

Funding for this project has not been secured although the project has been submitted for a READI Grant which if granted would provide 20% with another 20% needed as a local match and 60% required from private funding.  A grant application has also been submitted to the Community Foundation for this project.  Committee will assist in planning the project, handling the logistics, securing funding for the project, providing labor and or work on the landscaping when the project is complete. If you are interested contact Dick Markley, Greg Hildebrand, Adam Thada, Brain Main or Deb VanDeMark, park board members.  You can also send a message through the Marshall County Park and Recreation Facebook Page.
