NewsMonday morning, Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger updated the Commissioners on the meeting next month with representatives from the Indiana Office of Court Services.

On March 4th a select group of county officials will meet and Indiana Court Service to provide data and details on the county’s pretrial practices.

Clevenger told the commissioners that Chief Probation Officer, James Bendy has already had discussions and provided information to Court Services.

With the jail overcrowding conditions for months and the lawsuits piling up Court Services was invited to review the processes used in the county to see if there are changes that could be implemented to improve the system and help reduce the inmate count of those in the jail in pre-trail status.

Court Services made it clear that their recommendations will not tell the county to expand the jail or not.

Clevenger told the commissioners that last week the inmate count in the jail was actually two below the permanent beds available. The Sheriff has warned the commissioners and council that population in the jail typically takes a dive during the winter and will begin to build back up as the weather improves.
