CourthouseMarshall County Circuit Court Judge Curt Palmer appeared before the Marshall County Commissioners last week seeking a volunteer to serve on the newly created Courthouse Security Committee.

The new committee is a mandate of the Indiana Supreme Court and requires all court systems in the state to have individual security plans.  This requirement is in additional to the County’s already in place Safety Committee.

The committee includes representatives from each of the three county courts, a rep from Building and Grounds, the County Sheriff, County Clerk, someone from the IT department and a member of the County Council and a Commissioner.

The committee will typically meet annually, but this first year there will be two meetings to develop an Emergency Disaster Plan that the Supreme Court will have to approve.

The Supreme Court wants counties to be prepared and have a plan in place in case something would happen to the Court House and offices and courts would need to relocate.  Plamer suggested the possibility of having to lease space such as the old K-Mart building, space in the Lincoln Junior High once the school moves into the new building and vacant storefronts in the downtown area.

Commissioner Mike Burroughs motioned to have Commissioner Stan Klotz serve on the Court House Safety Committee since he already serves on the County Safety Committee.  The commissioners approved the motion.
