On Tuesday, October 1st, Jefferson Elementary School invited Mark Senter, the Mayor of Plymouth to kick off their official Walk to School Week. Principal Angie Mills said although the international official Walk to School Day is October 2, Jefferson Jets are celebrating wellness and safety all week long.

Jefferson_mark OwenOn Monday, Plymouth Police Officers Mark Owen and Steve DeLee spoke with first-grade students about bike safety. “Any students who were caught walking or biking to school will receive an entry into a drawing to win a bike, basketballs, soccer balls, or a seat at a special breakfast with Mayor Senter,” said Mills.

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. According to the website www.walkbiketoschool.org, the day It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, the event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration each October. Today, thousands of schools across the country like Jefferson participate every October.
