Lions_Lindsey CuellarWith growing concerns about climate and food safety, farmers are working to continuously improve how they raise food and protect the environment.  Lindsey Cuellar from Reicks View Farm and the National Pork Board Speakers Bureau addressed these concerns and explained how human, animal, and environmental health go hand-in-hand at the last meeting of the Plymouth Lions Club.  This presentation, using pig farming as a case study, demonstrates how a decades-long commitment to doing things better has achieved one of the most significant revolutions in food safety, nutrition and environmental stewardship in the last 60 years.  Pork is safer and leaner now more than ever.

The four stages in pig farming begin with Breeding and Gestation, Farrowing, Nursery, and Growing or Feeding.  Pig farming is the raising and breeding of domestic pigs as livestock and is a branch of animal husbandry.  Pigs are farmed principally for food and skins.

The Plymouth Lions Club announced that this year’s Blueberry Festival fundraiser was one of the very best in the club’s history.  They wish to thank everyone who visited their Lions Club Pavilion and enjoyed the blueberry pancakes and sausage or polish sausage sandwiches.  It is fundraisers like this that allow us to give back to the community and offer scholarships to high school seniors.

Twice annually, Plymouth Lions schedule donations at what is called a “White Cane Day” to support the cost of our KidSight program.  A grant is expected for a portion of the cost for a new refractor which is needed for the program.  The program is well underway for the year.  Operation KidSight is an Indiana Lions program to prevent early problems from Amblopia (Lazy Eye) which if not corrected before the child’s eye is fully developed may never be completely corrected without surgery.  The age will vary, but six is considered the outside age when the eye is considered fully developed.  Plymouth Lions, in cooperation with all the Lions Clubs of Marshall County, work to screen every child in this county.  Lions are about providing service but we are only as strong as those who so willingly join us in providing this service.  If you are interested in this program or any program sponsored by the Lions Club please contact any Lions Club member.
