SidewalkPlymouth Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt gave members of the Board of Public Works and Safety a cost estimate on a possible sidewalk project on South Michigan Street between Webster Elementary School and Family Express.

Last month, city resident Mike Delp told the Board of Works he sees kids and adults walking south to Family Express on the edge of the road to Family Express.  He said the walk on the edge of the road because the sidewalk doesn’t go all the way from Lemler Lane to the mini residential development on the cul-de-sac that has sidewalks as well as Family express.

Marquardt measured the distance and told the board from Jackson Heights Road south to the existing sidewalk the distance is about 200 feet.  Material costs would be about $2,400.  The distance between Jackson Heights Road to Lemler Lane is approximately another 450 feet with material costs estimated at $6,585.  He noted in this section there is quite a bit of fill that would be needed and the project would run through several residential front yards.

The Street Superintendent reminded Board of Works members that each year they only budget $30,000 for sidewalks so doing the entire project would be nearly a third of the total budget.

Councilwoman Shiloh Milner said, “This is a worthwhile project.”  Councilman Bill Walters said he sees pedestrians walking in the area often and said, “This is a good project.”  Councilman Jeff Houin suggested completing the project in two years doing the smaller portion next year and the bigger section the following year.  Councilman Duane Culp agreed with Houin.
