881 Broadway_2Members of the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety set a deadline for the two property owners at 881 Broadway Street to reach an agreement or the property will be demolished.

The apartment building has been a topic of discussion several times for the Board of Public Works and Safety.  In February the board ratified the Building Commissioner Keith Hammonds decision to have the building demolished.

Hammonds told them the building sit on five parcels and a party in Florida owns four of the parcels but the final parcel is locally owned and has the deed for the building connected to it.  While the Florida owner would like to remodel the apartments and rent them out, the local owner hasn’t showed any interest in the idea or selling the final parcel to the Florida owner.

881 Broadway_1During Monday evening’s meeting Hammonds said he and the city attorney have been reaching out to the two owners involved trying to come to a mutual agreement.  He said he would much rather save the building then tearing it down.

Councilman Bill Walters said he noticed some work has been happening at the site.  He said there’s been a large pile of trash which has been pulled from the interior of the buildings and it’s now been picked up.

Mayor Senter said two people are living on the property with permission and doing the cleanup work.

Councilman Walters asked what the city can do it they don’t reach an agreement and Hammonds said we already have a demolition order so we could move forward with that or take it to court and see if a Judge could get the two parties involved to come to an agreement.

The current demolition order approved in February is good for two years.

Councilman Jeff Houin said letting this keep dragging on just puts more work on the city attorney.  He said they should set a hard deadline.

The board unanimously approved 30 more days for some type of agreement between the two property owners or the city will have the property demolished.
