Erik Nunez crashA tragic accident on Memorial Day on the Ohio Turnpike claimed the life of three people, two of whom were from Plymouth and one from South Bend and injured four others.

The crash involving two semis and two passenger vehicles happened about 4:10 p.m. near Archbold, OH, about 40 miles southwest of Toledo, and was investigated by the Ohio State Police.

Details released state that a semi driven by 29 year old Kenneth Trowbridge of South Bend was eastbound on the turnpike and left the roadway going through the median and onto the west bound lanes.  Trowbridge’s semi crashed head-on into a pick-up truck being driven by 39 year old Refugio Elisandro Nunez-Pena of Plymouth.  Nunez-Pena and his front seat passenger, his wife  42 year old Simone Nunez were killed in the crash.  15 year old Erik Nunez, a freshman at Plymouth High School was critically injured and transported from the scene by air to the University of Toledo Medical Center.

The trailer from Trowbridge’s semi came loose, rolled over and struck the right rear of a passenger vehicle driven by 18 year old Isabella Nunez of Plymouth who was following her parents.  Isabella and two passengers in her vehicle, 19 year old Trevor Fisher of Plymouth and a 9 year old sister sustained minor injuries and were also transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Trowbridge was also killed in the crash.

Debris from the median struck the windshield of a semi being driven by 61 year old Allen Schlaback of Killbuck, IN who received minor injuries.

This crash continues to be under investigation by the Ohio State Police.  It is believed that alcohol use was not a factor in the crash.
