PLYMOUTH – Plymouth’s varsity came within shots of the school record 301 on Saturday in the 66th annual CMA Invitational, firing a new “team format” school record of 303 and taking a first place finish.
Playing in a team five player format the Pilgrims were led by the career-best play of Senior Bryce Carmichael 76. Bryce finished fourth overall. Junior Matthew Gerard bounced back from his worst round of the season with his best, a career-best 77, good for seventh overall. Senior Chapman Yoder wasn’t far behind firing a 78, good for ninth overall. Sophomore Owen Yoder carded an 82 and Freshman Bennett Christy a 91.
Gerard had birdies on 13 and 15, and played the first nine holes under par. Matthew beat his previous best by seven shots today. Carmichael suffered a triple bogey on 15 but got shots back on 18 with an eagle and a chip-in birdie on one. A birdie on eight late in the round helped keep him and the team rolling. Bryce smashed his best by nine shots. Chapman Yoder’s 78 was aided by two birdies late in the round on six and eight. Owen Yoder also carded a birdie on 18.
Rain enveloped the final three holes playing a role in all teams execution coming down the stretch.
Saturday’s win marks the first time since 2005 Plymouth was able to capture the title of the CMA Invitational.
The Plymouth JV traveled to LaPorte and played in the Westville Invitational at Legacy Hills on Saturday.
The rain started two holes into the round and never relented. The wind made the mid-40 temps feel colder.
Junior Tristen Moyer led the team with a 93. Sophomores Kyle Johnson 99 and Blake Edwards 105. Freshmen Eli Schramm 105 and Ashton Blalock 110.
The highlight of the day was Kyle Johnson’s birdie on his final hole the only one on the day.
