County news # 2A concerned resident appeared before the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday with concerns as he is trying to obtain a septic permit.

Donald Coffin Jr. who lives at 3822 Thorn Road told the commissioners he purchased the property at 3794 Thorn Road with plans to place a mobile home on the property where one had been located in the past.   He said he hired a local company to conduct an inspection on the existing septic system and it passed.

Coffin said the Health Department called him and said they are going to revoke his permit and he doesn’t know exactly why.  He said he was issued a location permit on April 9th and now they are saying he must have an IOWPA (Indiana Onsite Wastewater Professional Association) certified person complete a septic inspection.

Brian VanDusen who works for Huff Septic conducted the inspection on Coffin’s septic.  He said the IOWPA certification is not a requirement in the county ordinance.  He continued, “But she (Christine Stinson, head of the County Health Department) keeps pressing for it and it’s giving everybody a headache.”

Coffin said he was at the Health Department three times last week.  When asked if he had been before the County Board of Health he said no.  It was suggested he get on the agenda for the next meeting to plead his case and seek an appeal on the decision.
