Monday morning the Marshall County Commissioners approved moving forward with a phone upgrade using local provider Hyperwave.
The County Building and Court House will move to VOIP (Voice Over Internet Phones), moving away from conventional phones.
County IT Director, Michael Marshall reminded the commissioners that he’s been working towards this transition for more than a year. While he didn’t elaborate, he did say that contract will offer the county a substantial savings.
Hyperwave will bring an extra value to the county because they will bring their own internet service which can also be used as a back-up if the Metronet were to go down again, something other companies couldn’t provide.
Hyperwave presented a contract following the March meeting and County Attorney Jim Clevenger requested a couple of changes. During Monday’s meeting representatives from Hyperwave said the changes had been made to the contract but Clevenger hadn’t had a chance to review the amended contract. It was also recommended that Mike Miley, the county’s insurance consultant review the insurance requirements.
Marshall told the commissioners he wanted to get the project moving because all new wiring will have to be pulled in the County Building and Court House.
Marshall told the commissioners money has been allocated for the project in his budget on the communications line item although an additional will need to be sought to complete the entire project.
The Commissioners motioned to approve the contract pending review and approval of the County Attorney and Insurance Consultant.
