PHS_NANCY HOBY 2019Each year, Plymouth High School nominates and sponsors one sophomore to participate in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY). This year, the PHS faculty has chosen sophomore Nancy Garcia-Pena to represent PHS at the annual seminar that will be held on June 6-9. Nancy will be a HOBY ambassador and will join hundreds of other nominated sophomores who will be representing high schools from all over the state at the University of Indianapolis. Nancy said, “I am extremely excited to attend the HOBY and not only represent PHS, but also the Hispanic community!”

Nancy is active at PHS as a member of the Multicultural club, Future Teachers of America, Spanish club, Speech and Debate, and Interact club. After graduating from high school, her plans include attending college to study law, she hopes to earn a law degree and eventually become an immigration lawyer. Nancy said, “I enjoy motivating people to work hard for what they want and enjoy the accomplishments of their journey. I always make sure to stay positive and help others when they need it.”

According to hobyindiana.org, during the annual seminar, many dynamic leaders, all volunteers from the fields of business, education, government, and other professions, will address aspects of the changing world and the challenges future leaders will confront. The program does not promote any specific political party, religion, or way of thinking, but is designed to develop critical thinking skills by actively involving participants in discussions and informal debate.

The program also includes outstanding speakers, leadership activities, social events, and a special closing ceremony, which parents are invited to attend. Participants will be assigned dorm rooms on campus with two to three participants per room on floors reserved exclusively for the seminar. Parents, friends, and family members are discouraged from calling students during the seminar due to the disruption caused to panels and activities. Plymouth High School will be covering the registration fee for Nancy to attend the 2019 HOBY event.
