Plymouth Lions Club President, Doug Feece, recently inducted Ruben Ottenwalder as a new member of the club. All who were present welcomed him into the organization.
Clarence Shively presented to the club a local Boy Scout history. Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on February 8, 1910. The Boy Scouts have a room upstairs at the Marshall County Museum. The oldest picture on display is a picture of a 1914 Camp at Pretty Lake. Shively added that Scouting needs to be remembered and there is a geneology room on the main floor.
Many local people have been involved with the Boy Scouts. On August 21, 1912 Judge Marsh started the first Boy Scout Troop in Plymouth, with Mearl Strombeck being one of the charter members. Another interesting note was that Kenneth Lackey, one of the original “Three Stooges” in Vaudeville, was a Boy Scout in the first Troop in Plymouth. Noble Kizer was also in the First Troop in Plymouth. On September 1, 1928 Boy Scouts united Nationwide to place 3,400 Markers across the Country on Lincoln Highway. Markers were placed every mile from New York to San Francisco. It should also be noted that Sharri Shively of Tyner received the Silver Beaver Award in 1996 and Clarence Shively received the Silver Beaver Award in 1999. This is very rare for a husband and wife to both receive the Silver Beaver Award. Many other prominent members of our community have been a part of Boy Scouts of America.
The LaSalle Council Boy Scouts of America will be honoring Randall L. Danielson as the Soaring Eagle Recipient On March 28th. Marshall County is celebrating 100 years of Scouting!
In other business, the Club voted to sponsor a student for Junior Achievement. There will be many upcoming fundraisers coming so we can continue down the path of helping others have a better life. From the words of the Lions Club International President, Gudrun Yngvadottir, “Service is a Journey, sharing kindness, bringing hope to our communities, changing the lives of the people we serve, and changing our own along the way.” We are Lions, we serve.
