County News # 1Convicted inmates in the Marshall County Jail will soon be paying an inmate processing fee.

On Monday the Marshall County Commissioners approved on 2nd and 3rd reading an ordinance establishing a $50 processing fee for inmates that have been convicted. The new fee will be added to the inmate’s court costs and fines after they have gone through the court process and been convicted.

The ordinance does allow a judge to waive the fee if they have been determined to be indigent.  The fee will also be waived it the inmate is being held for another agency for a per diem payment or when an inmate is being held for safekeeping for another agency.

The fees collected will be placed in a new account for inmate processing fees and will be used for inmate education and counseling or for equipment, education and training for the Marshall County Jail staff and jailers.

During the public hearing on Monday, no one from the public commented on the ordinance.

The ordinance will now have to be published in the newspaper since there is a fee associated with it.  The new fee will go into effect 30 days after it is published.  It was estimated that it should be in effect in March.
