Senator Randy Head 2018Indiana has the seventh-highest smoking rate in the nation, and over 11,000 Hoosiers die because of tobacco use each year.

To address this issue, Senator Randy Head authored Senate Bill 425 this session, which would raise the age a person can buy tobacco or vaping products containing nicotine from 18 to 21.

In addition to affecting health, tobacco use costs Indiana spends $7.6 billion per year in healthcare, loss of life and lost of productivity.

Senator Head said, “If passed, this bill would help deter people from starting to smoke, which would positively impact Hoosiers’ health and our economy.”

SB 425 has been reassigned to the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy.
