MugShot_David BeggsAt a press conference on Friday, Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said the Grand Jury was convened for a second case involving former Culver Town Council member 57 year old David A. Beggs.

Beggs was indicted by the Grand Jury for a Level 6 Felony with a charge of arson on Thursday, February 7th.

According to the prosecutor, Beggs is alleged to have started a fire in a vacant rental house he and his wife Susan own at 115 West Marmont Street in Culver on July 13, 2017.  Chipman said the fire was set to defraud the insurance company although it’s an ongoing case so he couldn’t elaborate. He also commented that due to the fact the Beggs was a member of the Culver Town Council at the time of the incident the case was passed on to the Indiana State Police for the investigation.

Beggs turned himself into the Marshall County Jail on Friday, immediately posted the $1500 cash bond.  At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office additional conditions of his release was the execution of a waiver of extradition and surrendering of his passport.

Chipman said an initial hearing for Beggs is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12th in Marshall Superior Court I.  A status hearing is also scheduled for May 3rd.
