PHS_FBIMeeting Jan 2019Plymouth High School recently hosted two FBI agents as career guest speakers. The agents both work out of the South Bend and made the drive to Plymouth to give students career advice about their line of work.

Two dozen students were in the audience, gaining insight on what it takes to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The identities of the two agents who presented at the meeting must remain anonymous due to the fact that both FBI agents work undercover.

The agents covered a variety of topics, ranging from salary to the diversity of applicants, and noting that there are a lot of different educational backgrounds among new recruits. Every opening has around 200 to 300 applicants, and close to 80 percent of FBI agents have a masters degree. With such a high number of applicants, an application and a degree alone are not typically enough to set applicants apart. If students want to one day work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation the most important thing is how they spend their first five years out of college.

One of the agents said that individuals who enter the business must be fully committed to upholding the values and ideals of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

PHS College and Career coordinator Kelsey Flynn coordinated this first of its kind visit from FBI employees. Flynn says “The meeting was a perfect opportunity for students to gain insight about this exciting and competitive career that is off the beaten path! We are very thankful to both FBI agents for speaking to our students.”

Flynn said the students who registered to attend the meeting submitted questions for the FBI guest speakers. Of the 24 students in attendance, 20 were girls. The agents say the FBI encourages and pushes for diversity.

The FBI even has a program devoted to just this task – it is called, The Diversity Agent Recruitment (DAR) program.
