County news # 2Newly elected, Marshall County Commissioner Stan Klotz proposed a joint work session with members of the Marshall County Council during the first meeting of the new year.

Klotz noted that he’s a brand new commissioner and there are two new members on the council. The newly implemented restrictions on the Motor Vehicle Highway (MVH) funds are causing some concern to the commissioners and the council.  He said the work session would give Highway Superintendent Jason Peters the opportunity to discuss the new requirements to place half of the funds in a restricted line item that could only be used for construction, reconstruction and preservation.

Commissioner Kevin Overmyer said there are some concerns with septic issues in the county and Dr. Byron Holm would like to address both boards.  Commissioner Mike Delp who is serving on the county’s water task force said that committee would also like to update both boards.

A meeting date has not been scheduled but will be announced in the next week or so.  Commissioner Overmyer suggested the work session be a evening meeting which the other two commissioners agreed to.

Klotz also brought forth his suggested compromise to the engineer battle.  He recommended securing a contract with an engineer to be used by various county departments on an as-needed basis.  Stan said a policy could be put in place to determine how a county department would secure the services of a licensed engineer.

Commissioner Delp said he felt that was the current practice.  He said he was in favor of the full-time engineer at the highway department to take over the head positions allowing Jason Peters to spend more time working on the roads.

Commissioner Overmyer said it was something that could be looked into in the next couple of months.
