One of the most pressing needs for employers in Marshall County and Indiana is access to a skilled workforce. To meet this need, the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is taking steps to engage the youth with area businesses and Bremen Public Schools. This goal of reaching out to students is resonating in Bremen where on Wednesday, October 10th, over 490 high school students participated in Manufacturing Day.
This program is a national event that gives students a unique opportunity to learn more about a field that often goes overlooked. Bremen High School has participated in Manufacturing Day since 2014. This year, the event has grown to include freshmen, to get them thinking about potential career paths early.
Around 120 seniors and 140 freshmen toured some of Bremen’s largest manufacturers, including Southwire, Nisco, Bremen Castings Inc., and Indiana Carton Company Inc. In addition, around 110 juniors got the chance to visit Universal Bearings, Precision Painting & Interiors, Better Way Products, and Digger Specialties Inc.
Bremen High School has also extended programming to include more opportunities to expose students to a variety of career paths. 120 sophomores toured Bremen Town Hall, the Bremen History Center, Bremen’s Train Depot Museum, and the Sunnyside Park water plant to learn more about their town. These tours allow students to see the day-to-day operations of businesses in their community.
MCEDC President/CEO, Jerry Chavez, states, “Manufacturing Day is a unique event that will help ensure Marshall County students are career-ready. It is an excellent opportunity to expose students to a variety of job and internship options right here in our community.”
The benefits of this event can be seen throughout Marshall County. Plymouth High School, Argos Jr./Sr. High School, and Culver Community Middle/High School are also visiting local businesses as part of Manufacturing Day. All Marshall County schools are being encouraged to participate in the future to further develop our workforce and connect businesses with the next generation of employees.
