Culver LibraryIt was recently discovered that there is some mold growth on some of the library books and other surfaces in the lower level of the Culver Union Township Public Library.  The Library Board of Trustees and Director Colleen McCarty acted swiftly upon learning of this issue, and called ServPro out of Plymouth to assess the situation. It was their recommendation to bring in dehumidifiers to help bring down the humidity in the library, and to have the air quality tested.

A representative from ACM Lab, located in South Bend, came to the Culver Library on Tuesday, September 25th, and tested the air quality. They found that there is mold growth in several areas of the basement, including the computer lab, large meeting room, and foyer area. Those areas were subsequently closed to the public and library staff members.

Prior to this discovery, the Board had recently retained D.A. Dodd LLC to refit the HVAC system to better control humidity levels. Those repairs will soon be completed and will effectively prevent any further mold growth in the library.

Remediation to eliminate the mold began on Monday, October 8th. The affected areas will remain closed to the public and CUTPL staff until all remediation is completed. It is planned for the Library upper level to remain open to the public during this time.

McCarty said, “We are fortunate to have identified this problem early and to have taken the appropriate steps to remediate the issue. We will keep the public updated on all further developments as the information becomes available. Our top priority is the health and well-being of our staff, patrons, and the library.”
