Bremen Public Library logoBremen Public Library welcomes author Kerry L. Stevens back to his hometown at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14 in the Lower Level Meeting Room. The community is invited.

Stevens shares an intimate portrait of his late mother, Berthella Stevens, in “Forever Herself: A Son’s Memoir of a Strong Woman.” The memoir tells the story of a remarkable woman who forges her own path to live life on her own terms.

“Books can bring many things to many people. They can make us think, laugh, cry, or bring inspiration. I hope you experience some of these as you read,” Stevens said. “Books can also be an expression of love and appreciation. For me, this memoir is an everlasting love letter to my mother.”

Berthella Stevens is shaped by adversity in an impoverished, fatherless home during the Great Depression. These childhood crises propel her into an unconventional life, while reveling in gardening, writing, natural living, and caring for her family. Anchored by her faith, she endures ostracism and loneliness as she dares to be herself in her rural community.

Stevens credits his mother as a contributing author of the book, as he fused her poetry and prose with his own writings. Expressed through the seasons of her life, Stevens reveals the joys of being fully alive, while discovering her pain and new admiration for his maverick mom.

“Forever Herself will warm your heart, challenge your mind, and renew your spirit,” Stevens said.

Everyone is invited to attend the free program on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Meet and greet the author, hear a brief presentation, then take part in a question-and-answer session. “Forever Herself: A Son’s Memoir of a Strong Woman” will be available for purchase and Stevens is willing to sign copies of the book following the program.

Kerry L Stevens resides near Austin, Texas with his wife of more than 30 years. Berthella Stevens was a prolific writer, married for 65 years, and raised six children. She died in 2011.
