Plymouth Color Logo2014Plymouth Fire Chief Rod Miller presented a request to provide “stand-by” medical services to the Notre Dame Football team while they are practicing at the Culver Academies.

Monday evening during the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Miller said this would be the fourth season his staff has assisted the college team.  They would provide medical coverage from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on August 3rd through the 7th.

Miller told the board Notre Dame will make a donation to the department equal to their hourly rate.  The donation would be deposited into the city’s gift fund.

City Councilman Gary Cook asked if there was a written agreement with Notre Dame on the request and Chief Miller said no, it was just an annual request made to the department. Cook then asked City Attorney Sean Surrisi what kind of liability the city would have since it’s become an annual request and Surrisi said as long as there was board approval it’s a lot simpler with the understanding that they will make a donation for the services provided. Surrisi said, “In terms a liability, there’s not really any other risk than beyond our normal operations would be.  They are doing the types of activities that they normally do in terms of medical service.

Cook then questioned if the donation could be put in a different fund other than the gift fund, like equipment or general fund so that it could be appropriated?

Clerk Treasurer Xaver said normally ambulance receipts go into the general fund.  She said, “That would be my recommendation because the City Monetary Gift Fund not appropriated.  He (Chief) uses it as he wishes.”

Xaver said the city is trying to increase revenues and if the funds are placed in the gift fund they are not used for wages and operating expenses.

The Board of Public Works and Safety unanimously approved the request to provide services to the Notre Dame Football team and the donation will go into the city’s gift fund.
