County News # 1Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters will attend the Community Crossings meeting at the LaPorte District Office of INDOT next week.

On Monday Peters said the meeting has been called to go over the 2019 Community Crossings Grant.  The same formula will be used next year as this year.  Counties with a population under 50,000 will have to provide a 25% match and those over will have to do a 50% match.  This year’s call for projects will be in early to mid August.

Commissioner Kevin Overmyer said next year’s call for projects process will change.  He said, “Next year they will have a call for projects in January and August.  So if you apply in January and you aren’t successful you can apply again in August.  If you are successful in January you can not apply again in August.”

Peters listed out some of the projects he would like to look at for 2019 are North Michigan Road; Dewey Street to Michigan Road for the new shell building at Argos; 9th Road from Pioneer Drive to Union Road and 13th Road/State Road 17 to Olive Trail.

Commissioner Kurt Garner said there are some drainage projects on North Michigan Road must be taken care of before improvements to the road are made.  Garner said he thought the drainage project could be done as a separate project through Community Crossings.

Commissioner Mike Delp suggested Lake of the Woods as a project to consider for Community Crossings too.

Commissioner Garner said, “The way they rate these, I just don’t know.  They are looking for things that have economic development priorities.   I don’t think they are looking at homes, I think they look at arterials and businesses.

Peters said he doesn’t know what kind of funding will be available from the Community Crossings grant yet.
