death_investigationMarshall County Coroner, John Grolich investigated a work-site death on Friday morning, July 5th.

At 11:50 the Marshall County 911 Dispatch Center received a 911 call from Jarrah Road south of 12B Road.  The call said a man was caught under a large piece of earth-moving equipment.  The piece of equipment is called a stacker and it sorts dirt and rocks.

Grolich said employees were attempting to move the location of the stacker and for an unknown reason an employee, 46 year old Dion Hopper from LaPorte had exited a large front-end loader and was near the stacker when a set of wheels came down on Hopper, pinning him to the ground and then dragging him several feet.

Dion Hooper, from LaPorte had been employed by Area Excavating in LaPorte for nearly 20 years.  He was pronounced dead at the scene be County Coroner John Grolich.  Grolich was assisted be Deputy Coroner Bobby Cooper, Plymouth Fire and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

An investigation  will be conducted by Indiana OSHA.
