hemingerHeminger House Shelter for Victims and Families temporarily suspended emergency shelter housing on Friday, June 29. While Heminger House cannot currently take any new clients into shelter for temporary safety, they are still providing information and referral services to connect domestic violence survivors to the services they need. The shelter is temporarily closed until state grant funds are released.

Heminger House has suspended shelter one other time since opening in 2008. At that time, businesses, agencies, churches, and donors stepped up to the plate and helped Heminger House open shelter doors within a week. Diane Fisher, Director of Heminger House, says, “I want to thank the community for that support, and ask that you once again support Heminger House and help get our shelter up and running again. I personally came to Heminger House with a passion to help victims. We know there are victims who need immediate shelter for safety, and we want them to be able to access the help they need right here in their own community.”

Heminger House operates with 9 employees and 7 volunteers, maintaining 24-hour staffing of the shelter. While many employees have stepped up as volunteers, the organization needs to maintain a monthly operating budget of $15,000 in order to make payroll.

Heminger House can accept donations from community members, organizations, and businesses. Another way to support the organization is to attend their annual fundraiser, the Masquerade Gala, on July 28. The event includes dinner, entertainment, and a silent auction. Tickets are $40 per person and will be available until a week before the event.
