School Board_WSOIThree Weidner School of Inquiry seniors along with a 2017 graduate shared their experiences with the Plymouth School Board on April 17. WSOI Co-Directors, Michael Delp and Jennifer Felke, said the students are examples of those who are pursuing a graduation and career plan.

Jennifer Moncada is finishing her regular graduation requirements and at the same time, working towards her certification in cosmetology with Vogue. Moncada said, “Vogue has inspired me and given me a worthy opportunity.  She said WSOI has allowed her one-to-one interaction with staff, let her progress at her own rate, and develop friendly relationships.

Senior Rodney Sly was not able to be at the board meeting, but did write things he wanted the board to hear. He has been involved in the Building Trades vocational program. He said, “I am a hands on learner.” He then went on to express his appreciation for the teachers and other staff that lead him into the program.  Sly spoke about how giving presentations has helped him get over his fear of public speaking and ways that his math teacher and others taught him skills in problem solving.

Christina Olvera enrolled in WSOI in the winter of her junior year. She credited a number of teachers and the co-directors with leading her into taking classes in the ITAMCO center for precision machining.

She has enjoyed an internship at the ITAMCO facility. ITAMCO owners, Mark and Gary Neidig listened to her speak of the skills she has learned in machining and also the knowledge gained of what the workforce expects.

After the meeting, the Neidig’s said she is exceptional and they would be proud to have her in their employment. Olvera told the Board members that she plans to pursue further education in the field.

Dillon O’Brien could not attend the meeting to share his story in person, but did record his comments. O’Brien was able to study in duo-credit classes at WSOI that equaled a year’s worth of college.

O’Brien is now an Ivy Tech Certificate Recipient and ASAP program Chancellor’s Scholarship Recipient. He plans to attend IU next year to study Business Management and perhaps pursue a degree in Science

He said WSOI helped him gain leadership and social skills that will help him reach his dreams. He said, “I have some pretty high goals now.”
