County News # 1Monday morning the Marshall County Commissioners approved joining a coalition through the Michiana Area County of Government or MACOG to seek an additional Brownfield grant.

Three years ago Marshall County, the City of Plymouth and Town of Bourbon received a $600,000 Brownfield grant to investigate sites that may have contamination.  The grant provided for a phase I and or phase II environmental studies.

Leah Thill from MACOG told the commissioners that a grant would be applied for through MACOG with Marshall, Kosciusko and Elkhart counties in the amount of $600,000.  The idea is to continue with environmental studies on sites that may be contaminated in an effort to get those properties filled with business helping the tax base.  It wasn’t determined who much each county would get, that will be decided later if MACOG is successful in the grant application.

Thill said MACOG would handle the administration of the grant including all reporting and this grant requires no local match.

The Marshall County Commissioners passed a resolution approving the formation of the coalition with Elkhart and Kosciusko counties through MACOG.  They also authorized a letter of support for the grant application.
