School_board_meetingThe Marshall County Alternative School housed on the Plymouth High School campus continues to serve a number of students. The Plymouth School Board heard the annual report from teacher Katie Duran who took over the program last school year.

The alternative school provides instruction for students with special circumstances such as the need for a shorter school day or a longer school day in order to get the needed number of credits to graduate.

Although the program is open to students from all Marshall County high schools, Duran pointed out that only Plymouth students are enrolled. During the 2016-2017 school year, 73 students were enrolled.  Much of the casework is done on the computer that allows students to work at their own pace. Duran said they also offer some hardback books for those that prefer a more traditional method.

The curriculum includes English blended learning from Gradpoint Grammar and Canvas for reading and writing. The curriculum is aligned with courses offered at PHS.

According to Duran, the graduation rate was 80 percent, down from 92 percent the previous year. She indicated that one of the goals for improvement will be to increase the average daily attendance.
