Loren Mattern HeadshotPlymouth High School senior Loren Mattern is organizing the second Marshall County 5k Against Domestic Violence. This year’s 5k will be held in honor of Serenity Wilson. The 2-year girl old died from blunt force trauma on Saturday, September 19, 2015, a day after she was beaten unconscious by a person who was said to be a family friend.

All proceeds raised from the 5k will go to the Heminger House in Plymouth, a local shelter for women and children. The shelter provides caring, healing, and educational service for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The race/walk will take place on October 7, 2017, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Young Amphitheater in Centennial Park. The amphitheater is located at the corner of Baker and Randolph Streets in Plymouth.

Mattern’s goal is to raise $6,000. Last year Mattern organized the first Marshall County 5k Against Domestic Violence and raised $1,500 from local business contributions, 5k registration fees, and T-shirt sales. All proceeds were donated.

Mattern said, “On September 19, 2015, heaven welcomed an angel too soon. Serenity Wilson was two-years old when she left us. After seeing how this impacted the community as a whole, I made it my mission to do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. All proceeds raised will go to the Heminger House, to guarantee everyone a safe haven. Everyone deserves to have control of their life, and Heminger House helps this be possible in a safe environment.”
