WHEEL-TAX-TIREThe Plymouth Common Council took no action during their meeting Monday evening on the second reading of a proposed wheel tax.

While the city attorney presented the ordinance with the detailed rates, which were being seen by council members for the first time, the council did not move for a second reading.  Rates presented were at the maximum of $25 per passenger car and motorcycle and $40 for busses, heavier trucks, semis, buses and recreation vehicles.  The estimated revenue the new tax would generate is between $300,000 and $400,000.

According to state statute funds raised by the wheel tax can only be used for road improvements such as paving, design, bridges, and matching funds for grants on road projects.

For the wheel tax to be implemented for 2018 the City Council must pass the ordinance by August 31st.  Council members asked to table the ordinance Monday night to allow members additional time to review the details.   The ordinance could be considered on 2nd and or 3rd reading at their August 28th meeting.
