The Marshall County Dairy Association sponsors the Ice Cream Crank Off each year at the 4-H Fair.
This year five competitor set up in the Open Class building on Sunday afternoon and put their talents to work. There was the old fashion hand crank ice cream machine, three electric ice cream makers and one that created the cool summer treat by rolling a ball across the floor.
After about 20 to 30 minutes the three judges began the taste testing and rated the caramel flavor homemade ice cream by color, texture, taste and flavor.
Don and Eileen Morrison with their old fashioned hand cranked machine and lots of elbow-grease were number one with a perfect score.
Second place was Jack Thompson and Ann Bradley took third. The fourth and fifth place was from the same family. Nathan Schwartz took 4th with the roller ball operation and his dad, Mark Schwartz ended in 5th place with his ice cream that ended up being poured out of the electric mixer.
The competitors decided next year’s competition will be orange dream-sickle.
