J-turn ArgosThe intersections of U.S. 31 and State Road 10 and U.S. 31 and State Road 110 are vital to transportation and economic development in Marshall County.

State Senator Randy Head said Friday, “To address safety issues related to these busy intersections, the Indiana Department of Transportation  (INDOT) proposes building J-turns, which would keep cars from crossing the oncoming traffic on U.S. 31 by requiring them to make a right turn, a U-turn, and then another right turn.”

Head continued with his comments, “The county needs new business to locate near U.S. 31, and residents need convenient access to that important road. Putting J-turns in this intersection would hurt the county’s strong efforts to procure new employers.”

While INDOT proposes J-turns to Marshall County residents, it is not the only solution.

Senator Head said, “My hope is that INDOT will agree to install a wider interchange so cars and trucks can enter and leave U.S. 31 safely. Safe access for residents and strong infrastructure for business is key to the future of Marshall County.”

The senator continued, “I have explained my opposition to INDOT, and I encourage you to do the same. If you wish to weigh in on the proposed J-turns, have another idea, or want to suggest a change, please contact INDOT at LaPorteDistrictCommunications@indot.in.gov.”

Let INDOT know what you think while the time for public comment is still open. INDOT is accepting comments through Monday, July 10.
