County Building_2The County Building will be not open to the public until 8 a.m. following a decision made by the Marshall County Commissioners this week.

During Monday’s meeting Commissioner Mike Delp said the recommendation of the Safety Committee was to not open the doors on the County Building until 7:45 or 7:50.  He explained that the maintenance department has been routinely unlocking the doors about 6:30 in the morning.

During the discussion County Auditor Julie Fox asked why the building was open to the public early.  She said employees sometimes are not ready to begin their work day when customers before 8 a.m.  Fox said the Court House isn’t open until 8 a.m. The security guard stands at the door and lets in employees who don’t have access and unlocks the door at 8 to the general public.

The commissioners felt the safety factor of having people in the County Building before 8 a.m. was an issue that should be addressed.

From now on the building will remain closed until 8 a.m.  If employees need to enter the building and don’t have a key, the security guard will let them in using the north door starting at 7:45.

Another change the commissioner enacted was locking the north stairwell for people entering the north doors and heading upstairs without the security guard knowing they entered the building.  The first floor door will be locked for people walking up stairs but will be open for all foot traffic coming down the stairs.
