According to Jordan, specialty-built vehicles are manufactured as replicas of older style cars produced at least 25 years ago. Examples of duplicate vehicles include the 1955 Porsche Spyder and the 1965 Shelby Cobra, which are often home-built by an individual using a kit reproduced by low-volume manufacturers.
“Without this new law, these newly produced vehicles would continue being a reconstructed title, which is equated to a salvaged title in other states,” Jordan said. “Out-of-state customers hesitate when purchasing specialty-made cars from Hoosier businesses because of the titling issue. This law helps to stimulate economic opportunities here in Indiana.”
A summer study committee will also work with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to examine similar legislation in 23 other states to explore solutions for other titling issues involving replica cars.
