County news # 2

The Community Corrections Program in Marshall County was granted approval from the Commissioners to apply for additional grant money to fund additional services during their meeting Monday.

Community Corrections Director Ward Byers asked for their support of a additional $33,000 from the Indiana Department of Correction. Byers plans on spending $20,000 for a jail treatment program that would allow inmates to work on attaining their GED. The funding would pay for staff, materials and even tablets to allow inmates the ability to study and take tests.

$13,000 would be used for the purchase a new case management system. Byers said the jail will be moving from CSI to Odyssey and the new system doesn’t have software for community corrections.

The commissioners unanimously supported the request and Byers said, “It’s cheaper for the state to pay others to care for inmates.”
