INDOT_Chip & SealU.S. 6 will be closed between State Road 23 (Walkerton) and U.S. 31 (LaPaz), beginning Tuesday, June 8 and running through Friday, June 10. Crews will perform a chip seal and fog seal operation to preserve the road surface.  This project is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions aren’t ideal.

State road detours must be along state-maintained roadways only. Drivers traveling west on U.S. 6 will be detoured north on U.S. 31, west on State Road 4, south on State Road 23 and back to U.S. 6. Drivers traveling east on U.S. 6 will be detoured north on State Road 23, east on State Road 4, south on U.S. 31 and back to U.S. 6.

Chip Seal Explained-

The chip seal process consists of distributing a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering the liquid asphalt with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Once the asphalt has cured, any excess chips left on the roadway are swept from the surface.

Chip sealing extends the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultraviolet degradation, and other damaging exposures. In addition to sealing the pavement, chip seal applications reestablish surface friction – improving safety for the motoring public. Of the pavement preservation methods employed by the state, chip sealing is perhaps the most cost effective. Studies show that every $1 invested in chip seal operations saves $6 to $14 in future roadway costs.
