The Crossing LogoAccording to the America’s Promise Alliance, an estimated 30 percent of U.S. high school students drop out or fail to graduate from high school.

The eye-opening statistics are just one of the reasons the Plymouth Community School Corporation decided to help launch a new program that serves as dropout prevention initiatives here in the Plymouth Community.

This fall Plymouth High School and the Plymouth Community School Corporation, in conjunction with The Crossing helped open the Marshall County Campus of The Crossing Schools. The school, which is located at 1007 W. Madison, is designed to be a school for students who have dropped out of school and want to return to school to finish their diploma on a part-time basis.

Students at The Crossing attend classes from either 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and students enrolled can take classes via computer while assisted by teacher Bridget Harner and a campus administrator named John Weldy.

In addition to the online courses, the students also take courses to help them develop life skills and also a financial planning course based on the work of Dave Ramsey.

Students also complete at least three hours of community service in our surrounding community each month.

Currently the Plymouth Community School Corporation has 15 students attending The Crossing.

Dan Tyree, the Superintendent of Plymouth Community School Corporation said, “The Crossing catches our students who have fallen through the cracks dropped out, or have been pushed out of a traditional education setting. I believe having The Crossing here in Plymouth now gives students a viable alternative solution for completing their high school education.”

Students can also attend The Crossing who attended or once attended Triton, Union-North and Argos School corporations as well. For more information about The Crossing, or to enroll, please contact John Weldy at 574-914-2051.
